Heder
Heder is dedicated to providing compassionate care for individuals with motor or intellectual disabilities, neuromuscular disorders, or noncongenital brain injuries.
The name "Heder" derives from "Hedera," a family of climbing plants. Like these plants, individuals with disabilities may require support to thrive, yet retain autonomy over their growth—choosing how, where, when, and if they progress. This philosophy guides Heder's approach: offering expert, gentle support to empower individuals with disabilities to integrate fully into society.
Digitizing to combat exclusion
People with disabilities are more likely to sit at home for a variety of reasons, for example due to mobility problems. As a result, they are not always able to participate in the Heder social events. This has an impact, because by missing such events, their clients sometimes become isolated more quickly.
There are digital tools on the market to come together online. However, most of these tools require a certain amount of digital education or even expertise. They are therefore not very useful in the context in which Heder works.
Heder wondered if there was no possible solution to organize online activities in such a way that they become accessible to everyone. That's how they wanted to combat exclusion and loneliness.
Digital platform for online activities
As a socially-minded organization, we at Kunlabora didn’t hesitate for a second to get involved in this project. We began with a Discover & Design phase to validate the potential value of such a digital platform. The first step in this process was to bring together the expertise of both organizations to conceptualize what a solution could look like. Kunlabora has the necessary expertise in software design, while Heder knows their clients well enough to understand what would or wouldn’t work.
Afterward, the development phase began with a clear goal in mind. Heder’s clients needed to be able to participate in an online activity with a single click, without the extra complexities that often accompany other software. We made this possible by integrating video conferencing into a low-threshold, user-friendly platform. Viewing the weekly schedule and signing up for activities can be done in just a few clicks.
The platform is designed in such a way that Heder can manage the more complex aspects, such as user management, on their own. Thanks to its user-friendliness, Heder is able to reach a wide range of participants.
